Hair thinning (Alopecia) is a common problem not talked about enough.  We see so many causes of hair loss in practice, ranging from stress, genetics, hormones, to autoimmune issues, surgery, illness and diet.   Just as there are a variety of causes, we have a handful of treatment options to treat hair loss.  Regardless of the cause of your hair loss, most treatment options remain the same, in addition, to treating any disease that could be causing the hair loss.  Androgenic Alopecia is the most common form of hair loss which is genetic.  Another common cause of hair loss from stress called Telogen Effluvium.  This hair loss is temporary.  We also see many people who take medications that cause hair loss, most commonly beta blocker hypertension medications and blood thinners.

One of our favorite treatments includes the Fotona Hair Restore laser.  This laser emits a nonblative erbium:yag wavelength at lower energy. It is considered a LLL (low level light) therapy.  The laser stimulates dormant hair follicles to “wake back up.”  Some of our patients see improvement over a few weeks!  We recommend a series of at least 6 treatment sessions, scheduled 2 weeks apart.

Other treatment options can be included while using laser, such topical and prescription medications like oral finasteride, dutasteride, minoxidil, and spironolactone or topical dutasteride.   PRP  scalp injections can also be performed concurrently (which is a procedure where your blood is drawn, processed, and then injected back into the scalp). In the last 2 years, Exosome research has lead to the understanding that they can be used to grow hair as well.  Exosomes are the peptide messages released by stem cells.  They carry the messages and instructions to other cells surrounding them on what to do.  Exosomes for hair growth are taken from the umbilical cords of healthy new babies.  The cells are put through grueling tests to confirm the DNA is not damaged and the cells are free of disease. Then the stem cells are grown in the laboratory and the exosomes are harvested from the medium as it is secreted from the cells.  Exosome treatments are easy and quick with no downtime.

With all patient we like to optimize their vitamin levels.  Vitamin D and other vitamins are essential for hair growth.  Nutrafol supplements address many of the essential vitamins and minerals for hair growth and our patients have great success with its use.  Many of our patients start with topical and oral medications, others prefer laser treatments or exosomes to avoid systemic exposure to medications, and some patients require all treatments to achieve the best results.  We tailor your treatment plan individually for your needs.

This patient had used a variety of treatments as recommended, including the Fotona Hair Restore Laser.  So if your thinning hair has bothered you lately, call our office so we can help.
