Laser Hair Removal

Before hair removal lasers were developed, the only treatment options for hair removal included shaving, waxing, threading, and depilation. These treatments are still used today when treating blonde and gray hair, as lasers cannot address lighter colored hair.

Hair removal lasers are designed to attract the dark bulb of the hair. The best candidates for hair removal are those clients with very light skin and dark hair. Those with darker skin types, and those with lighter colored hair, can have laser hair removal but frequent treatments may be necessary.

There are three phases of hair growth: anagen, catagen, and telogen. The hair bulb is only present during the anagen phase—the active cycle of hair growth. Since the hair bulb is only present during this phase, a series of laser treatments are needed for successful treatment. Laser hair removal takes an average of five treatments to eliminate the hair permanently.

Permanent hair removal is defined as the long-term, stable reduction in the number of hairs regrowing after a treatment service. At Retief Skin Center, we use the Spectrum Diode laser for hair removal. Diode hair removal lasers are very effective for hair removal and safe to use in darker skin types.
