Hair Restore Clinic

Hair loss can be extremely frustrating for both male and female patients. Genetics, hormones, nutritional deficiencies, stress, and autoimmune conditions are only a few possible causes of hair loss. At Retief Skin Center, we are passionate about creating a team approach to finding the causes of your hair loss and developing a tailored treatment protocol to serving your hair loss needs.

We find that hair loss treatment takes a multiple modality approach to regrow hair successfully. Regardless of the cause of hair loss, everyone wants their hair to grow back. Yes, you must treat any underlying contributors/causes (like underactive thyroid) to prevent continued loss, but to "actively grow" hair, the protocol is the same. It is a slow process, so be prepared to be patient.

Most of our patients have androgenic hair loss, which is a genetic predisposition to hair loss resulting from hormonal changes within the blood/hair follicles as we age. Our treatment protocol includes a hormone analysis and recommendations to a hormone specialist. Keep in mind to grow hair, you must have the right building blocks including amino acids, vitamin C, zinc, biotin, magnesium, vitamin D, and many other nutrients. In addition, you need to reduce inflammation around the hair follicle. You also need to preserve the hair follicles you currently have so they will continue to be able to manufacture new hair. With age and hormonal changes, hair follicles shrink. Lastly, you need heat and blood supply to the area to be able to deliver the nutrients to the hair. This is where the laser treatments and massage are beneficial. We find that the patient needs to address all these issues to give their hair the best chance to grow.

WHAT TO EXPECT

First visit

During your first visit, we will review your medical and life history. This includes hormonal changes, medications, supplements, recent stressful life events, and more. Family history also plays a significant role. We’ll examine the scalp to see if any hair loss patterns or any dermatological scalp conditions exist. We recommend that all patients see their primary care provider for bloodwork and a physical once per year. At your visit we will determine if additional bloodwork or a referral to a hormonal specialist is needed. We’ll also review treatment options and see what fits your schedule and needs. Unfortunately, insurance does not cover hair loss treatments.

Expectations

While we are hopeful that our patients will experience hair regrowth, each case is different.  Some factors, including scarring of the hair follicles or strong genetic dispositions, may make hair regrowth limited. Many of our patients notice hair regrowth; however, hair regrowth cannot be 100% guaranteed.

PRESCRIPTIONS

Dutasteride: Dutasteride is a prescription oral medication that blocks the conversion of testosterone to DHT, an androgen responsible for prostate growth and hair loss. It is widely prescribed off-label to reverse male pattern baldness.

Spironolactone:  Spironolactone is a medication used for high blood pressure. At lower dosages, it can be used for hormonal acne and hair loss in women.

Finasteride:  Finasteride is a medication used to shrink an enlarged prostate. It has also been shown to help with hair loss in men, and sometimes in women who cannot get pregnant.

Metformin:  Metformin is used with a proper diet and exercise to control high blood sugar. It is used in patients with type 2 diabetes. Because high blood sugar can cause hair loss, some patients have noticed reduction in hair loss.

Seborrheic dermatitis shampoo:   This shampoo is an anti-inflammatory shampoo with ciclopirox (antifungal), clobetasol (topical steroid), tea tree oil, and zinc.  It is commonly used to treat seborrheic dermatitis, or dandruff, of the scalp. Dandruff can be inflammatory, which can cause hair loss. By treating the underlying condition, we see hair regrowth.  Sold in office for $70

Minoxidil/Dutasteride Solution:  This combination of Dutasteride 0.5% and Minoxidil 5% works directly on the hair follicles and works well in combination with other treatments.  Sold in office for $75

PROCEDURES

Steroid injections:  $150/per 1mL

When inflammatory causes are the underlying culprits for hair loss, steroid injections can help initiate growth. We recommend a series of 3 treatments every 6 weeks.

PRP injections:  $450/treatment

Also known as platelet-rich plasma, PRP injections involve drawing your blood to retrieve your own platelets to reinject into the scalp. The growth factors from your fresh platelets stimulate the hair growth and can thicken existing hair by 30%. We recommend a series of 3 every 6 weeks.

Fotona Hair Restore Laser:  $400/treatment or 6 for $2,100

Fotona Hair Restore laser utilizes low-level laser light therapy (LLLT), also referred to as "photobiomodulation therapy”. This produces gentle deep heat, which is thought to increase activity of stem cells of the hair follicles. We recommend a series of 6 treatments every 2 weeks, and then maintenance every 4-5 months.

Exosome Therapy:  $2,000/ml or $5,500/5ml

Exosome therapy is a safe and effective way to restore hair follicles. It also helps to prevent hair loss or thinning hair. Exosomes are micro-vesicles, about 0.1% the size of an average cell. Exosomes contain 200 plus growth factors, including those that directly contribute to healing, tissue regeneration, and hair restoration. They stimulate your body's natural regenerative potential, resulting in thicker and healthier hair.

Injectable Dutasteride 0.1%: $500/session

Also known as dutasteride mesotherapy. This is an off-label, minimally invasive treatment for androgenetic alopecia (pattern hair loss) that involves injecting the medication directly into the scalp to block DHT. It aims to increase hair density and reduce systemic side effects compared to oral medication, with promising results in early studies.

PDGF $800/Syringe

Platelet-derived growth factor is a protein that regulates connective tissue cell growth, wound healing, and blood vessel formation. It acts as a potent signaling molecule to stimulate fibroblast activation & collagen production, making it a key component in regenerative medicine & anti-aging dermatology.
