Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning is a simple and safe method that provides a deep exfoliation and removes dry skin. It is a relaxing treatment that is non-painful, and doesn't leave behind red, irritated skin. Using a scalpel and a delicate touch, your aesthetician will simply scrape the surface of your skin using light, feathering strokes. This is a great treatment for clients who are pregnant or nursing who want a deep exfoliation, but aren't allowed to use peeling agents on their skin due to the risk of chemicals absorption into the blood stream.

The secondary benefit of dermaplaning is to remove of vellus hair, also known as peach fuzz. This hair often causes a buildup of dirt and oils in the follicles, and removing the hair thereby gives the client healthier looking skin. Contrary to popular belief, vellus hair does not grow back longer, thicker, or darker. After a dermaplaning procedure, your hair will begin to appear again in about two weeks.

Removing epidermal skin allows cosmetic products to penetrate more readily into the deeper layers of your skin, leaving your makeup appearing more natural and less caked-on. Dr. Retief may recommend this treatment to prepare the skin for medical procedures such as laser treatments or deep chemical peels. It also may be used by aestheticians to prepare the skin for superficial chemical peels or before a cleansing facial.

Some people make the mistake of thinking that shaving your face with the type of razor your shave your legs with is the same as dermaplaning. While you can absolutely do that, you will only be ridding the skin of hair but not dead skin. Lots of skin is shed in a proper medical dermaplaning treatment due to the high quality of the blade being used. Serums and moisturizer should applied immediately afterwards. Do not use dermaplaning if you have an allergy to nickel, numerous raised lesions on the skin, or inflamed acne.

There is no downtime associated with this dermaplaning. Our aestheticians will help educate you on the importance of using sunscreen to reduce the chance of hyperpigmentation.

Dermaplaning can be done as often as every two weeks, although it is usually done when vellus hair starts to grow back, which is generally within one month following the procedure.

Dermaplaning is most often used on clients with rough, dry skin, superficial hyperpigmentation, mild scarring, or fine lines and wrinkles. The treatment results in a more refined, smooth, glowing appearance. It is the perfect treatment for anyone experiencing dull and lifeless skin. If you're looking for that red carpet glow, dermaplaning delivers instant results.
